Welcome to Matt’s page about weather. I have always been fascinated with the weather, and as a former pilot and a current sailor, knowing what’s going on up in the sky is extremely important for safety and comfort.

The weather information displayed above is from a weather station Emmy & I have installed on the roof of our home, near Chicago’s Wrigley Field. If you live nearby, this is as accurate as it’s going to get!

In January, 2011, I am enrolling in the Penn State Certificate in Weather Forecasting, a four-course online college-level course. I am going to document that through this weather blog.

Favorite weather books

Here are a list of my favorite books about weather forecasting (links on the title will take you to Amazon to purchase if available):

General Weather Books

  • A World of Weather: Fundamentals of Meteorology - A college-level texbook on weather, written by the directors of the Penn State Weather Forecasting Certificate I am taking. Expensive but worth it. Loose-leaf format and comes with a CD-ROM with a lot of excellent examples and illustrations.
  • Meteorology Today - Another introductory college-level textbook.

Weather Station

The graphic above is provided courtesy of the Weather Underground. We have a Davis VantagePro 2 Weather Station on our roof, which feeds data to Weather Underground. So if you are interested in whether the wind is blowing out at Wrigley, this is probably a good place to check.
